Abstract

Anxiety before examination is a problem which is  faced by many people, include The Junior
High School Students (SMP).  As double-sided knife, anxiety can be a trigger to accelerate
motivation of study. While at the other side, anxiety can disturb the activity of study. The aim
of this research is to examine degree of anxiety between the experimental group and the
control group. Is it different or similar between them?
I  conduct the experimental research with the pretest-posttest control group design. 16
students of SMPN 150 Jakarta, class VIII are the subject of this research. They are equally
divided into two groups randomly. The first group is the experimental group while another is
the control group. Rational Emotive Behavior (REB) Counselling Method are applied
towards 8 students in the experimental group.  While, to the control one, counsellor teacher
(BK)  make counselling session by usual method. Data collection by instrument of SKMU,
scale of axiety before examination which is redeveloped by researcher. That instrument has
been validated by construct validity KMO > 0.5, and loading factor >0.4. From 39 items, I
have reliability of each construct at range 0,615 – 0, 852. Finally, I use two independent
sample test Mann Whitney U as data analyze.
The result is: There are significantly differences degree of anxiety of students between
experimental group and control one. The average score at control is 142,25 and at the
experimental group is 142. Conselling use REB is effective in reducing anxiety in physical
and motivation aspect.
By this research, I can enrich any relevant research in this anxiety reduction using
REB. The researcher realize that any limitation of the research. One of the limitation is,
group conselling using REB has not implemented in longer duration. Based on the result and
finding, I suggest for the next researchers to use REB by conduct more times and in any level
of education, i.e : SMA, SMK, and even SD (elementary school).
